Cramps, shin splints, and chest pain: what to do when running hurts

Updated: Oct 6, 2022

How do I stop chest pain when running? A person may be able to prevent chest pain by:

  1. eating a balanced diet.

  2. exercising regularly.

  3. avoiding tobacco smoke and alcohol.

  4. managing high blood pressure with medications.

  5. avoiding activities that increase the risk of physical injury.

  6. controlling asthma with medications.

Shin splints

Shin splints is a type of shin pain, usually caused by exercise. It's not serious and there are things you can do to help get better.

What to do

  • take paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease the pain

  • put an ice pack (or bag of frozen vegetables) in a towel on your shin for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours

  • switch to gentle exercise such as yoga or swimming while healing

  • exercise on soft ground, if you can, when you're feeling better

  • warm up before exercise and stretch after exercise

  • make sure your trainers or shoes support your feet properly

What not to do

  • do not continue doing the exercise that caused your shin splints

  • do not rush back into exercise at the level you were at – build your exercise routine back up slowly

Why you get cramp & what causes it?

The exact cause of muscle cramps is still unknown, but the theories most commonly recognised with runners are:

• Dehydration & electrolyte depletion • Poor conditioning & muscles strength • Muscle fatigue or lack or quality rest • Overloading training & racing too quickly • Lack of quality sleep • High levels of alcohol & caffeine
